What Is Character Development?

Character development is a learning process that helps students and adults in a school community understand, value, and comply with core ethical values such as respect, justice, citizenship, and responsibility for themselves and others. Children learn core values throughout their character development, including patience, courage, integrity, generosity, kindness, justice, commitment, positive attitude, and tolerance.

Character education is an overarching term that includes all aspects of how schools, relevant institutions, and parents can support the positive character development of children and adults. Character education teaches the thoughts, actions, and habits that help people live and work together as families, friends, neighbors, communities, and nations.

Why Is It Important?

Students spend most of their time in class. This is a time that gives the opportunity to explain and reinforce core values. The school environment offers a number of opportunities for students to learn, discuss, and implement positive social behaviors.

Character development is the foundation of personal development. Children put into practice the skills that support character development, while creating a resource of strength that they can leverage throughout their lives. Self-respect, trust, courage, resilience, integrity, and tolerance are among some of the traits students can maintain at home, school, and with the society. Such skills are needed for each child to develop, to be satisfied, and to create an impact for the good of the society.
