“What Would You Do?”
Practice:
Students are told that they will participate in an activity to explore similarities and disagreements. Then, the following scenario and an action taken as a result of it is read out. Students are asked to tell whether they agree with the hero’s action mentioned in the scenario, and explain the basis for their opinion. Once the scenario is read, students note their ideas down according to three key points (I agree, I disagree, I am not sure).
Scenario: You are attempting to go to toilet at school and see a younger student sob inside. Three older students stand in your way, telling you that you cannot use the toilets, and shut the restroom’s door. One of the elder students who shuts the door says: “If you get in or if you tell anyone else about this, you will be the next one.”
Action: Since they are older than you, you are frightened and leave, and try to find another toilet without saying anything.
After you tell the scenario, the classroom is divided into two opposite areas, one for those who agree, and the other for those who disagree. Those who are unsure stand in the center, where there are placards hung that read “I am not sure”. Students are asked to select their respective area to stand and discuss their ideas with friends on the same side. Once the discussions with smaller groups are concluded, students get back to their seats for a class-wide discussion.
